  • Private blame over public shame

    Mistakes happen.

When one makes a mistake, it’s shameful and it’s better that no one else knows of our weakness, right? We prefer to narrow down the information of our mistakes to the minimum.

And so we prefer private blaming over open communication, or public shaming.

When working with more people than me, myself, and I, keeping the information of anything to yourself will become an issue at some point.

But in some environments this is the promoted way. This is likely a good hint of toxicity.

  • Give me a screwdriver

    Said a developer, likely never.

Even if screwdriver is not used, at least a lot, in software development, other tools are. Editors, compilers, libraries, spotify, browsers, consoles, gen-AI girlfriends, coffee machine, food delivery, and other tools enable the modern development of software.

Some of the used tools are expensive, others irreplaceable, and some are tailored or do-it-yourself. As sometimes the wheel isn’t round enough, so it’s better to develop a rounder wheel for the development…

The challenge with tools in development organizations is to find the balance between anarchy of tools and over harmonization of tools.
